Terms of Service

Effective date: March 5, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using OpenSlug (“the App”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

2. Ownership & Intellectual Property

OpenSlug, the OpenSlug name, logo, and all associated branding, trademarks, service marks, and trade dress are the exclusive property of OpenSlug. All rights reserved.

The App's source code, design, user interface, and all related materials are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works of, or otherwise exploit any part of the App without express written permission from Brian Taylor.

Nothing in these Terms grants you any right, title, or interest in or to the App's intellectual property beyond the limited license to use the App as described herein.

3. License to Use

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, you are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use the App for your personal, non-commercial screenwriting purposes. This license does not include the right to sublicense, sell, resell, transfer, assign, or otherwise exploit the App.

4. Your Content & Ownership

You retain full ownership of everything you write using OpenSlug. Your scripts, notes, and all creative content you create belong entirely to you. We have no claim over your work.

Because everything you write stays on your device (see Section 6), we never access, view, store, transmit, or process your content on any server. Your writing is yours — completely and exclusively.

5. Prohibited Uses

You agree not to use the App to:

  • Engage in any unlawful, harmful, or malicious activity
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App's code
  • Scrape, copy, or reproduce the App's design or functionality for competing products
  • Impersonate OpenSlug or Brian Taylor, or misrepresent your affiliation with either
  • Use the OpenSlug name, logo, or trademarks without prior written consent
  • Introduce malware, viruses, or any other harmful code

6. Local Storage & Data

OpenSlug is a local-first application. All data — your scripts, settings, and preferences — is stored exclusively on your device using your browser's IndexedDB and local storage. No data is transmitted to, collected by, or stored on any external server.

You are solely responsible for your own data, including maintaining backups and exports of your work.

7. Data Loss & Your Responsibility

Because your data lives entirely on your device, certain actions can result in permanent, unrecoverable data loss. You acknowledge and accept this risk. Examples include — but are not limited to:

  • Deleting the app from a mobile device — on iOS and Android, uninstalling a Progressive Web App (PWA) or clearing the app from your device will permanently erase all locally stored data associated with it.
  • Clearing browser data — clearing cookies, site data, or browser storage in your browser's settings will delete your IndexedDB data and all saved scripts.
  • Clearing app/site storage — clearing storage specifically for the OpenSlug site or installed PWA will result in the same permanent loss.
  • Device loss, damage, or reset — losing, resetting, or formatting your device will delete all local data.

Always export or back up your scripts before uninstalling the app, clearing browser data, or performing any action that could affect local storage. Use the built-in export feature to save copies to your files.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The App is provided ”as is“ and “as available,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Brian Taylor disclaims all warranties, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be error-free, uninterrupted, or free of security vulnerabilities.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Brian Taylor shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including loss of data, loss of scripts, or loss of work — arising out of or related to your use of the App, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, the “Effective date” at the top of this page will be updated. Continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.
